The most beautiful vacation regions
The Valais 4'000m
The most famous mountain in Valais and in the whole of Switzerland is without doubt the Matterhorn. With its shape that cannot be mistaken, the mountain shines in all its glory. People from all over the world marvel at the mighty Matterhorn while staying in Zermatt. Some believe that the Matterhorn is the highest mountain in Switzerland. However, the Dufourspitze forms the roof of Switzerland. At 4,634 meters, the peak reaches the second highest peak of the Alpine massif behind Mont Blanc in France. Mont Fort and Weisshorn are two other famous mountains in the Valais region that many would like to climb. The Mont Fort is the highest mountain of the 4 Vallées accessible by a railroad, while the Weisshorn is the main peak of the Weisshorn group.
Winter and summer destination
Valais is a breathtaking destination in winter. The large ski resorts in Zermatt, Crans-Montana, 4 Vallées and Portes du Soleil and Saas-Fee attract with hundreds of kilometers of slopes. Meanwhile, the smaller ski resorts such as Bellwald or Grächen-St.Niklaus exude a cozy atmosphere for families. And in the summer, the canton turns out to be a true hiker's paradise with a network of over 8,000 kilometers of trails. The magnificent mountain panorama, the wild streams and the dense forest exude pure wanderlust. But biking is also one of the popular summer activities. With great routes in the valley and on the mountain, everyone gets their money's worth. Valais is also home to two nature parks with numerous animal and plant species as well as one of the most important wine-growing areas in Switzerland. The untouched nature from the edge of the village to the highest mountain peak could not be more beautiful.
Zermatt is one of the largest municipalities in Switzerland in terms of area. With the Matterhorn as its landmark, it attracts tourists from all over the world and at any time of the year to the car-free village. The best place to get a view of the imposing mountain massif is from Lake Riffel. You can reach it after a 10-minute walk from the mountain railroad station Rotenboden of the Gornergrat Bahn. The best thing to do is to take the highest outdoor cog railroad up to the viewing platform - you should not miss this view.
The Gornergrat mountain peak is located in the middle of two glaciers and offers a view of 20 different 4,000-meter peaks. Among them are the famous Matterhorn, the Monte Rosa and the Liskamm. Today, the Gornergrat ski area is connected to the Klein Matterhorn ski area by a new gondola lift. The Plateau Rosa is a glacier field in the Zermatt ski area. Here you can ski even in summer on the glacier. Haven't you ever wanted to whiz down a ski slope in the middle of summer wearing a T-shirt and shorts? This is exactly the kind of adventure that the diverse region allows you to have and makes it so special.
Crans-Montana is of central importance for alpine skiing. The World Ski Championships have even been held here. But also in summer the high plateau high above the Rhone valley is worth a trip. Did you know that Crans-Montana is considered a golf hotspot? With the Omega European Masters golf tournament, the Crans-sur-Sierre golf club hosts one of the most famous tournaments in Europe.
It is the longest and largest glacier in the Alps and measures about 22.75 kilometers. The Aletsch Glacier is drained by the Massa River, which eventually flows into the Rohne River. Due to climate change, the area of the glacier has decreased enormously in recent decades. For Switzerland, however, this still existing glacier is not only an important source of fresh water. The region around the Aletsch Arena in the Upper Valais was even named the first Alpine UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its beauty and is ideal for hikers and nature lovers.
Ski resorts 4 Vallées & Portes du Soleil
As the name suggests, the 4 Vallées ski area in Lower Valais spans 4 valleys. Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, Verbier and Tzoumaz make up the main resorts in this region. The Mont-Fort is the highest mountain of the ski area with proud 3'300 meters above sea level. In summer, mountain bikers also feel right at home here. In Verbier, a bike park with 8 slopes of varying degrees of difficulty awaits bike fans young and old. Only the Portes du Soleil ski area with the Swiss resorts of Torgon and Val d'Illiez can keep up with this.
Tip: Grand Dixence dam
At 285 meters, the dam in the canton of Valais is the highest gravity dam and the fifth highest dam in the world. The massive structure used to generate electricity impresses everyone. Of course, guided tours with light and sound shows inside the dam are met with great interest. But the top of the dam also serves as a perfect starting point for hikes - for example, the Ibex High Trail.
